Is Nash a Good Fantasy Point Guard (aka Why My Co-worker is Dumb)

Written by Dr Furious on January 13, 2006

Furious is back, in his rightful place, on this lovely Friday morning. Yeah I should be working, or editing wifey’s essay, but I am neglecting both tasks to bring some knowledge to the masses. This will be short and sweet, but hopefully enlightening and thought-provoking. Since it has been a minute since my last appearance, I cannot promise a hate-free article or a well written one either. I’ll see what I can do on both fronts. On that note …

My Dumb Co-worker

I work with a guy who loves to argue about sports, even though he has a pitiful pittance of knowledge. I am sure that most of you reading this probably work with someone who has a similar role. What makes this co-worker really unique is that he roots for the following teams:

New York Yankees

Pittsburg Steelers

Los Angles Lakers

U.N.C Tar Heels

I would hate anyone who roots for these teams on general principle alone. All four teams are storied franchises, some of the most successful in their respective organizations. I honestly believe that he sat down and looked at the most successful franchises in sports and decided to become ultimate fanboy. What makes it worse is that he is born and raised in Boston. How do you become a Yankees fan growing up here? It blows my mind!

So the icing on the cake here is that if you have not played for any of these teams, you invariably suck according to my co-workers logic. So when I asked him what he thought about Steve Nash, his predictable reply was that: “He Sucks!” I believe I questioned his mental stability after this statement.

My co-worker avioded being completely useless, and indicated that Nash’s tendency to turn the ball over makes him a liability. While Nash does turn the ball over a ton, one stat speaks volumes about his fantasy value. Nash’s assist to turnover ratio has always been very good, and this year is no exception. Nash is averaging a league-high 11.2 assists per game with 4.1 turnovers per contest. That places his assist to turnover ratio at a healthy 2.73. What is Nash’s career mark in this category? The answer is a lusty 2.875. I’ll take that any day of the week. Nash is a golden god in any league that counts assists or assist/turnover ratio.

Nash is not a great fantasy point guard, but he is a damn good one. His percentages from the field and the line are always very good, and he can hold you down in the assist category by himself. I am sure owners would like to see him shoot more threes and grab a couple more steals a game, but this is really nitpicking. I love what Nash has brought to the table the last two seasons in which I owned him, and I am sure that other owners would concur.

The bottom line of this little ditty, my co-worker is really dumb. Then again, what else would you expect from a person that roots for the teams he does? Anyway folks, that will do it. Furious is hopefully heading home soon. If you are in the Davis Square area later tonight, you may see Furious at a local watering hole. I’ll be the angry, black dude sitting at the bar with a glass of single malt in my hand. You would be wise to do the same.

The fan that can't see beyond his own teams is retarded.

Always.

I tried to get homeboy into some fantasy, but it didn't take.

For me, nothing topped the Lakers/Redskins/Univ. of Michigan/Yankees fan who could not tell me what position Don Mattingly played.

Um, only the second- or third-best Yankee of the past 20 years homie.
