Fuck the Media (except for TiVo and The Fool)

Written by Ricky on August 02, 2005

This is going to be short and sweet for a couple reasons.

1. Our fearless leader Xach had what was apparently a late night, as he posted a message at five-something in the morning saying he had just gotten home and asking someone to cover his article slot. So I didn't have much time to work on it.

2. The first reason, although true, is really just a lame excuse. I'm not capable of writing any more than this, as I have trouble concentrating on any task for more than about five minutes. In any case, enjoy.

Steroids

This is something that we rotogods have been discussing amongst ourselves for a while now, and is even more pertinent in light of the Rafael Palmeiro positive test: Why hasn't there been more media scrutiny on guys who were suspected steroid users, started out the season slow, and are now back to form? Jason Giambi is the prime example, but guys like Todd Helton and Travis Hafner (before he was kissed by a curveball) come to mind as well.

Now, until yesterday, I had a theory. Maybe, I thought, scientists have developed a new form of steroids that nobody knows about, and that won't be detectable until somebody sends a sample to a government lab anonymously. Nobody is stupid enough to go back to using the stuff they're actually testing for. Right? Well, it looks like I gave too much credit to the intelligence of Major League Baseball players. Apparently they are that dumb. And what's up with Raffy's excuse? Pathetic. I'd really like to hear what this "supplement" was that he took that he didn't know had steroids in it.

Anyway, all I'm asking is for a little media scrutiny. It just baffles me that in a media climate where it seems that nothing is off-limits, this issue has not been addressed more. Come on, pussies! Let's hear it!

NFL Holdouts

I also have an issue with the media's treatment of T.O. This has been discussed before, but the hypocrisy in the media is so egregious these days that I feel the need to address it again. Terrell complained a little bit. He wants more money. Fine. Look, I've got no sympathy for the guy. He makes more money in a year than I'll see in a lifetime. But the guy is one of the best-conditioned athletes in the world. He goes out and plays hard every day, and he helps his team win. It's also a fact that if the Eagles decided they didn't want him any more they could cut him and not pay the rest of his contract. Would there be a public outcry that the Eagles should honor the contract they signed? I doubt it. I know that's how it works, but it seems like a pretty fucked up system. I don't know why any NFL player signs a long-term deal to begin with really. But hey, those agents are smart guys, there must be some reason.

Anyway, I've gotten off topic. My point is that with all the shit T.O. has taken, he showed up to training camp. Brian Westbrook didn't. Hines Ward wants a new contract too. But nobody seems to care. You know what I think? It's a case of latent, subconscious racism. Yeah, I said it. Whatchyou gonna do? The same racism that created that stir over the Desperate Housewives thing. As far as we've come, a lot of people still have some sort of deep-seated issue with cocky, outspoken, alpha-male black men.

Anyway, that's enough serious crap for me. I don't even know why I'm up at this hour. Time to do a little work and play some internet poker. You've got your reading material for your morning deuce. Quite frankly, that's all you...(Smacks self in face. Can't seem to stop saying this). Somebody please make him stop.

Rick, I'm with ya.

Juicer meatheads need to be exposed. It's like now that there is a crappy policy, reporters have decided they no longer need to ask questions. Giambi has his 16 home runs this month, no one's suspicious? Come on!

14 home runs actually for Giambi, the most since Mickey Mantle in 1961 ... but still, makes for obvious suspicions I agree.

nice one Rick. I'd go on to say that the media's treatment of these issues is doubly offensive given the amount of coverage that is out there purtaining to things that no one cares about anymore like Ricky Williams, Larry Brown and John Gruden :)

I have issues with humble, reserved, beta-male asians

I think a media outlet's stable of reporters should resemble a coaching staff, or if you're lucky, the office environment. You have to have a designated asshole, the guy who questions everything, hands down punishments, etc. You have to have the voice of reason, who actually listens to the athletes' when they say they didn't rape that woman or know they were on 'roids. And hopefully, you have someone at the top who actually knows what he/she's doing, and makes sure you push to know as much as you can without passing judgment by your coverage ... in other words, leave it up to the reader to decide for his or herself, with as much information as possible.

And I often think almost all sports coverage is tainted with not really outright racism, but just a strong preference for "good," "all-american," cereal box white guys.

Xach was on a date. That's why it was a late night for him.

That's true. Dates be good fun. Bring the whole kids!
